Chris Rogers, a left-handed opening Test batsman for Australia, has announced that he will retire from international cricket right after the Ashes series in England this summer.

Rogers has played twenty Tests for Australia and has scored a total of 1535 runs at an average of 39. Currently he is part of the Australian squad for the two-Test series against West Indies scheduled for June this year.

Before making international debut, Rogers spent ten years playing for Western Australia. In 2008 he moved to Victoria. Rogers has played county cricket in England for past 10 odd years for various sides including Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Middlesex and Derbyshire. He has captained the Derbyshire county team. Interestingly, Rogers has played 289 first-class matches (both in Australia and England), he has scored a total of 23,796 at an average of 50.

Despite his first-class average of almost 50, Rogers was only inducted into the Australian team at the age of 30. At age 30, on 13 January 2008 Rogers was selected in the Australia Test squad as replacement for injured Matthew Hayden. Rogers played his first and only test then at the WACA Ground (in Perth) against India. He was recalled to the Australia national team at age 35 for the Ashes series in 2013.

Retirement

Chris Rogers, now 37, had indicated of his retirement after the Ashes way back in November 2014, when he was selected in the Australian squad for the home series against India.

Rogers is content with his career, and believes England is probably the best place (outside of Australia) to hang up his boots. Rogers says:

"I'm very happy, I've been pretty fortunate to have this second go at it and have loved every moment of it, but time calls on everyone and I think it's nearly up for me."

"I think to go out in the Ashes and in England where I've played a lot of cricket is pretty fitting," he added.
