It was game four of the five One Day Internationals between England and New Zealand. The Kiwis had batted first and posted a mammoth 349 on the board, a total they would have been more than content with.

When England came out to bat, their urgency and commitment to win the match looked really clear. It was for the first time in months when the English opening batsman had a century stand. In their stand both Alex Hales and Jason Roy ensured that they set a new batting power play record for England. The opening pair slammed 97 on the board in the first 10 overs.

In the game, all English batsmen played out of their skins and produced the best ever batting performance to successfully execute their highest ever run chase in One Day Internationals, drawing the ODI series 2-2.

Until April odd, English openers were just performing below their ability, on this occasion, everything was meant to be different. Alex Hales and Jason Roy scored 111 off only 12.5 overs before the two had fallen to some average bowling from New Zealand.

But it wasn’t just the openers who made the difference. Capitalizing on the near perfect start by the openers, Captain Eoin Morgan and Joe Root shared a third-wicket stand of 199 off 159 balls, which ensured England won the match with seven wickets and six overs to spare.

Captain Eoin Morgan was near perfect in his innings of 113 off only 82 balls. This was his eighth ODI century. Morgan was equally complimented by a strong Root who remained unbeaten at 106*. This was Root’s sixth ODI ton.

In his gaming winning effort, Morgan hit five sixes to become an England batsman with highest number of sixes in a series. He has hit 16 sixes in this serious, which is one more than previous highest of 15 by Kevin Pietersen in a series against South Africa in 2004-2005.
