It was an inspiring 68 of 46 balls from Joe Root, which along with quick fire cameos from Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Ben Strokes helped England compile a winning total of 191/7.
New Zealand was given a blistering start by Brendon McCullum scoring 35 from 15 balls. The Black Caps looked all set to give the English a run for their money. But great fast, straight bowling from Mark Wood meant, New Zealand lost quick wickets and were bundled out for poultry 135, handing the hosts a 56 run win in the solitary T20 match.
England bowlers, especially Mark Wood making a T20 debut were surely the source of inspiration for an English victory. New Zealand has some splendid hitters of the cricket ball, but amid tight bowling by the English bowlers, led by Wood who finished with figures of 3 for 26 in his three overs; the kiwi batsman never looked dominating enough to take the game away from the hosts.
Following the 3-2 ODI series win, this win in the lone T20 game, the final international match before the Ashes (scheduled to start July 8) meant a lot for the England team, and their post match celebration said it all.
Most cricketing advocates had seen this T20 match as a miss match in the fixture of perfectly placed tests and ODI series ahead of the Ashes. But in its own way, the match was very important. It is only one of the four confirmed T20 games England have before they travel to India for the World Twenty20 championship next year.
